Asymmetry – symmetry

Conversion of a shop

Despite its excellent location on Vorbergstrasse, the premises were no longer in a suitable condition to be let as a high-end space. The deterioration of the façade and the shop itself had made extensive refurbishments necessary, thereby creating an opportunity to reinterpret the façade with regard to its original Wilhelminian architecture. It now houses an apple store.

The façade

The entrance has been repositioned onto the central axis of the building, thus solving the problem of an asymmetrical disorder and making a beckoning gesture of hospitality. We were required to remove parts of the iron structure and, once it had been shifted further to the left, the right-hand pillar was reinforced as a load-bearing element. The windows were expanded to achieve a uniform height among the three openings, thereby creating a horizontal emphasis. The shop front was reshaped in a unique sophisticated manner. A special door handle was developed as a sculptural reinterpretation. The interior of the shop was redefined spatially. Its sanitary facilities were upgraded, exquisite timber
